What is heard when you dial 911? 8911? Note that dialing '8' in '8911' only draws a second internal dial tone, to re-assure the customer that they can go ahead and dial the telephone number. Who is your LEC and how do they 'supposedly' handle '911' calls. If you are on a PRI or T1, that could be your problem. Have they EVER been able to dial 911 and/or 8911? When did the calls start failing. Maybe when they changed to another LEC. Have YOU tried it? Can the calls be made after a direct trunk access? What have you tried.?

There are a multitude of possible reasons and you need to start by determinig where the call fails.

Check your modified digit table to make sure you aren't deleting a digit on 911, just 8911. Agree with lightninghorse, when did it stop or did it ever work?

I usually use a speed dial for 911 i.e 911 dial 9911 or in your case 8911.

What they said. ^^^^^

Also, if you are using any sort of call restriction, make sure that the 911 routes are designated in form 26 as "Emergency" so that all phones can dial 911.

If this came to light as a result of an emergency, it would be worthwhile to go onsite and test each 911 calling method to try to determine what happened:

9+911?
8+911?
9+11?

In an emergency, some folks may panic and dial a 9+911, which might not be a valid digit string for you.

Just tell the 911 operator, "No emergency, testing 911 dialing on the PBX system."

It's common courtesy to get the regular telephone number for the 911 answering location and call them and confirm that it's ok to test. Sometimes those folks are busier than a 1-armed paperhanger in a tornado!

Good point.

Which reminds me: I did have one hotel once where 911 was going to the non-emergency line of the County Dispatcher. Turns out that the Telco didn't have direct access to 911, and that was their work-around.

Had a Hotel in Cripple Creek, CO. that 911 would NOT work out of! EAS answers, call drops. I had ordered 18 G/S lines in a hunt group. Group wound up about 30% L/S! Turned out the L/S's worked for 911. So I gave up on getting the L/S lines fixed. (Quote: "It's not possible to mix G/S and L/S lines in the same group." So Sayeth Useless West!) Since 3 of the L/S lines were 16, 17, and 18, I put them in their own outbound group and ONLY 911 calls accessed that outbound group. When you're handed lemons, make lemonade!

I had an odd problem a few years ago on a new 200EL install. 911 calls would go thru but not all calls had audio. We had 12 lines in the system and there was no pattern to the problem. Sometimes a trunk would work and sometimes it would not. After working on this with the telco for over a week they found a bad trunk at 911. 911 said we were the only place having trouble. I never could get an answer as to why we were the only one that was dialing in on there bad trunk.
