Picking at the scabs in this old brain, I would suspect the SLIC for the console, if it's not the console itself. It's on the MCC as I recall. BUT, it's soldered in place on the newer MCC's and not a field changeable part.

F5F is certainly correct about the 20 not coming back from a power down, but you must turn it off to remove anything beyond the cover and the amphenol connectors! smile And there is supposed to be a thin sponge looking 'thing' on the outside of the fan inlet that acts as a dust filter. If it hasn't been removed and washed in the last 6 months, IT NEEDS IT! In fact, it would be a wise idea to have a source of compressed air available to clean off the boards and 'hose' out the chassis. Guaranteed, it's covered with a thick layer of dust, internally.

I clear out the fan motor regular. I also replaced the fan itself a few months ago because the barrings were going out and the fan would stick. Some one passes by the cabinet all the time so if it's no acting normal (stranger noise, weird LEDs) we look into it. I'll post after we test the console.

There are some after-market handset volume boosters, I want to say that Viking makes them. I've seen them on SX-100/200A consoles, and SX-50 consoles.

Well here's the latest update. I was finally able to borrow another console and test with my system and test my console at another location. My console worked fine at the other site but the other console had the same problem at my site. So this eliminates the console at the problem. Looks like it might be the misc card or a loose wire. I'm going to check the wiring and make sure all the splices are in good conditions. Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for the advise.

Note that you also have a console card mounted on the side of the power supply. The connector for the console plugs into it. It's behind all the cables that come in next to the power supply. I would certainly suspect that first!

BlueD, if I can bluntly say what 55' hinted at: It may be time to retire this SX-20 in favor of a newer model. This one's been obsolete for nearly thirty years.

It might be time to at least upgrade to an SX-50, and maybe all the way up to an SX-200 ICP... it's not too late to join the 21st century.

I have to agree that the SX20 is beyond reasonable support. Finding good parts will be hard. The 20 went out of production in 1990. Anything out there for sale is at least 20 years old and has probably been repaired at least once and probably more.

Opting for the SX50 is an alternative, although I'd recommend an EL 19 or an ICP. The SX50 has been out of production for 10 years, and consoles are in short supply. And without a console, programming is not fun and room status functions are not available.

Final update. Thanks for everyone's help.

Success. As a last ditch effort before I look for a new system, I powered down the system and removed and reseated all cards. I then unplugged and replugged all the ribbon cables. It looks like something was loose because it's working now. It's nice to be able to use the console handset. We got by using the auto attendant extension as the main because it's only used for the night service. Thanks again.

Good news! Thanks for getting back to us. And for an amplified handset: https://handset.com/compatibility.aspx Graybar can get it for you, among others.

And I'm jumping on the bandwagon with everyone else in suggesting you start 'saving up' for a new system. EL single cabinet would serve you fine. 1 DNIC-12 card, 6 ONS-12 cards and 1 6-trunk line card fit perfectly.
