Q. I need to change out the battery on the CPU card of a system that is now working in the office. When I do so I do not wish to reprogram the system memory. What should I do to change it out and save the memory that is now in use over the total system?
The manual telles me what to do with a new system yet says nothing about what to do after one runs the system to the point a "B" flashes in the display saying to change the Lithium Battery out. Can you please set me streight on this change out. Thanks for your help.

I would power down , and lose programing rather than risk changing the battery with a old system like this "hot"

I would rather spend a half hour re-programing than have a "oops " and try to find a replacement ksu

The battery just snaps in. You can pull it out with a yellow probe pick. It's just a big watch battery.

If the installation manual says to add the battery after power up then you can also remove it. Just be careful that's all.

To prepare the CPU PCB:
1. Slide the Switch-1 (top switch) to the INT (left) position.
This ensures that the system will load the default database
on initial power-up.
2. Power the system up.
3. After the system has been powered up for a minimum of
10 seconds, insert the battery into the battery clips.
The printing on the battery should be facing up so that
it is visible when installed.
4. Slide the Switch-1 (top) to the RUN position (to the right).
Note: NEVER move the switch unless the intent is to clear
all programmed memory.
Refer to Part 4, Installing Optional Equipment for instructions
on installing Background Music and Music on Hold.

you will PROBABLY be ok .

but what if something slips , the battery for instance ?

OOOps and your out searching for a discontinued part and customer is without phone service for a day or two

why take Evan the minor chance ?

power off and re-program and you will walk out with a satisfied customer

take the opportunity to go over programs and suggest changes they may benefit the way they do business now
something this old a default and reprogram is not a bad idea anyway

I'm going to charge a hour min anyway , might as well give them the full hour

Danger Danger will Robinson!

Skip, I agree with spending some time and maybe doing a quick program training session. After all it's all about customer service and how comfortable the customer is with various features.

If his hands are a bit shaky on the Dentist extraction surgery of the lithium battery and he slips and falls of his step latter at the same time it will be a total nuke meltdown.

I came accross a system with the battery issue recently. Amazingly the customer had a new battery onsite. Due to time restraints I replaced the battery while the system was hot. Maybe not the best idea, I was very careful, but it did work without any issues.
