In theory Vonage will work with any phone system that accepts Loop Start Lines. Besides quality issues, the Vonage adapter may not provide a reliable disconnect supervision signal.
I have Vonage here at home and the sound quality is great, But 50% of the time The caller ID does not come thru. When I first got vonage it was unbearable, But I set up QOS in my little D-link router and now you can't tell the difference between it and my old verizon line.

Great to know...I'll give it a test. It seems incredible that this move will reduce my phone cost by hundreds of dollars per month
Or am I missing something?

Like with everything else, you get what you pay for. With traditional land lines, you probably never saw an interruption in service for years on-end. With Vonage or any IP-based service, there are a lot more variables in delivering your service. If you receive you high-speed Internet via cable TV, well you probably know how cable TV comes and goes. DSL and cable also have traffic-related issues that can slow down data. This isn't normally noticed for regular data traffic, but it is a very big issue with voice.
I tend to notice that in the evenings when all of the kids are on-line, the quality of our cable TV high speed Internet degrades significantly. If you can live with the occasional glitches, then yes, you can benefit from Vonage's savings.
As for a good router to use, I've had great luck with D-Link's #DIR-625 for my IP phones at home. Not perfect, but at least it manages to corral the local data packets and prioritize voice. So far, so good. Of course, there is no QOS (Quality of Service) gurantee on a public Internet connection, so that's where you'll find the most of your problems.

I have a T1 and a DSL backup when the inevitable outage does happen. I dont know about QOS...
this adaptor of vonage's would plug inbetween the smart jack and the PBX box? yes?

The Vonage adapter simply connects to your router or switch just like a regular computer would.
If you have a T1, your Vonage experience should be fine. There's probably no QOS there, but at least you won't be subject to nodal backups that can slow down the network as with cable or DSL.
What do you have to lose? If it doesn't work well for you, you can always cancel your agreement with Vonage. Just be careful about porting numbers over to them. Keep your main number with the LEC because with many VOIP carriers, once you release your number(s) to them, you might not be able to get them back.
If I were you, I'd get their service to use for outbound calls and leave the current lines in place. That way, you can take advantage of the outbound call savings while you test out the voice quality. If it works to your satisfaction for a couple of months, then you can transfer everything else over to them at that time.
Don't count on your fax, modems or credit card terminals to work on Vonage or any VOIP network, whether public or private. That's still in the works and may be for quite some time.
