I am the in-house telecom person for a small
university in Iowa. I've been asked a question
about caller ID through a PBX which I don't know the
answer of...hope you guys can help:

I know that there are PBXs and Key systems that can
pass incoming Caller ID to a phone, but is there
a system that allows the remote phone to see the calling extension's number (i.e. behind a PBX) on their caller ID display?

...whether the remote party called into the
system or was called..?

Right now, they see only the trunk number that carried the call, when they are called..

I've never heard of such a feature myself..

Thanks in advance!

It would probably be helpful to post this question in the category of which PBX is in question.

Well, I know that our present PBX cannot do
anything like this, so I was asked if a different
PBX would...that's why the post to the "general" section..more open-ended..

Thanks for the reply. If you can suggest some systems, I'll be glad to post to those forums..

I've never heard of a system to do that. It's not the system that sends out CLID, it's the local Telco and they wouldn't have a clue which extension was used to make the call.

I know that Nortel systems can be programmed to tell the Telco which truck line to show when using a PRI, but not the ext. number.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it. laugh

I think about as close as you are gonna get is to have the PBX send out the DID number as the caller ID for each ext. Alot of times you can match the ext number to the last few digits of the DID, for instance, you have DID 555-555-5123, you could assign that to ext 123 or 5123. Have that number sent out as the CLID for any outbound call from that ext.

you would need digital trunks (PRI)

Tadiran calls it alternate line ID
NEC ISDN calling party number for extensions.

basically you would assign a number to the extension that would be sent out on the call.

Some stipulations with the providor need to be considered as well.
Tehre is also E911 which integrates with an 3rd party database that when a number is seen it gives address, room# and some other detailed info.

ESI systems will send a CID number over a PRI to the Telco but not a name or an ext. They will also forward caller ID to a remote call forwarded number, so you would see the originating caller ID not the host PBX caller ID when receiving a forwarded call.

Any Panasonic with PRI can send CLIP number if it is input. Can be any number up 16 to digits.
You can elect to send either Extension CLIP or Public CLIP, on a system wide basis, users can override with feature code. Extension clip can be your 10 digit DID or any other number, input 10 digit number plus * Plus Ext number for both. Some PBX may be unable to receive more than 11 digits.
