I have a furniture manufacturer that has a router with a win95 box controlling it. I had the unit connected to the network but they decided to move the machine. The "self-proclaimed" computer genius maintenance man tried to reconnect it but had the cord in the wrong NIC so he deleted/removed/uninstalled all network connections. I'm able to reinstall the NIC but the TCP/IP Internet Connection is gone under Network Connections and requires the Win95 disks to reinstall.

Will the setup disk only do an initial installation or will it give me an option to repair the current installation?

SO if I cd to windows\options\cabs and do the setup it will offer the option to repair the installation or does it do a reinstall without reformatting the hard drive?

its been a while since i did a re-install of win 95 but i do think it will fix your problem. One great thing with win 95 you were able to copy the cab files to a hard disk and do a full install without the CD. and i wouldnt worry about formatting, if i remember correctly windows 95 needs f-disk to format, the format option isnt part of install.

wow, a 95 box it has indeed been some time.

If you need a boot disk, one can be obtained here https://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

But you should be able to make one (if you have a floppy lying around) by typing format A: /s at a dos prompt.

It's been some time and I can't honestly remember, but you may need CD drivers and possibly mouse as well.

1. Boot W95 to command prompt.
2. From the windows\options\cabs sub-directory, at the command prompt, enter: setup /is

This does a fresh installation of W95 over top of the existing, replacing any questionable system files with fresh copies. It is totally non-destructive to data, drivers, and settings.

Find a Windows 95 CD (make sure you get the right version) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_95#Editions

Then either stick the CD in the drive, then follow the VMWare instructions above to reinstall the TCP/IP stack, point to the cd.

Or if the computer doesn't have a CD drive or it is not working. Pull the harddrive out, mount it on another computer via USB to IDE adapter or direct to an IDE cable. Then copy the CAB files over to the computer. You can put them anywhere, but it's best to put them in c:\windows\options\cabs as already mentioned. Then follow the VMWare instructions to reinstall the TCP/IP stack.

That should fix you right up without having to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows 95.
