Hello again guys,
First of all... I want to thank you all for your prompt, accurate replies on my previous posts!

I have a DX-80 system with flash voicemail. It somehow evidently got in a loop and recorded over 100 empty, short voice mail messages... the caller ID stamp said they all came from the same number and they were all about 2min apart...
1. how could it have gotten in this loop, so that I may can prevent it in the future
2. how can I delete all these messages (at once?) without having to go through the arduous process of deleting them from the phone?? Can I delete them from the flash card in windows using a card reader? are they all stored in a particular folder?

Thanks!

Patrick

As for 1.) you probably have a disconnect supervision issue with your dial tone provider. And for 2.) you can probably pull the card and if you have a win 98 machine and a card reader, you might be able to delete them all at once. I would just take a few minutes and go through them punching the 4 to delete. That to me, seems less painful.

You could provide a little more info, where did the MT messages end up? Was each one dialed in? or caught in an endless VM loop?

Mark is right. Pushing 4 100 times would be quicker than disassembling the mail, moving the flash drive, reading......

Glancing thru this thread it doesn't appear anyone mentioned how to fix this...

More than likely it was caused by either a lack of disconnect supervision or the system may have just missed it.

Usually what happens is that a caller dials the number after hours, listen to the main greeting (such as routing box 500), and hangs up because the office is closed... the system misses the hangup and continues to play the box 500 greeting, and just as any good telephone tech would have done your tech set the system up to automatically go to the general mailbox (or system mbox, operator mbox, etc.). In the past this was done in case someone had a rotary phone or just couldn't send digits. The system plays the mbox greeting, then takes a 8-10 second silent message. Each mbox has a setting in the config that says "after recording message" do blank... these are often defaulted to RETURN or Return to Box 500 (the main greeting). This is often programmed to be a courtesy... you leave a message for one person, then are automatically taken back to the main menu where you could try someone else... in your case this is just how the LOOP is created.

Dead call comes in, goes to box 500, then to general mbox, leaves blank message, is routed back to box 500 to start the process over.. usually the process will end when the mbox is full.

3 things you can do to correct/limit this.

1. In each mbox that can be reached automatially find the "after recording message" feature and set it to SAY GOODBYE... the system will politely say "Thank you , Goodbye" and hang up after the caller is done recording. 1 blank message, easy cleanup.

2. In the Routing box, mbox 500 in this case. Change the "no digits dialed" setting to SAY GOODBYE. in theory you will have 0 blank messages.

3. Make sure the general mbox can't get more than 20 or so messages. Basically it gets full faster and lessens the problem.

We started using these 3 settings a few years ago and now we only have trouble with systems that haven't been setup this way.

Good luck, Bob.

Test your system to see if the disconnect signal is being received from the telephone company. All you need to do is select an outside line and place it on hold. After about 30 seconds, the call should drop off. If it doesn't, then this indicates that you are not receiving the disconnect signal. Here are some other posts regarding this same situation with a different voice mail system:

Hope this helps!

rfrantic is correct.
However, the Comdial Keyvoice DX product doesn't go back to a main greeting by default under the condition he (rfrantic) describes. Instead it goes to another rout box (821) that offers the operator, or an extension and if nothing happens, it says goodbye, by default. But all the settings listed by rfrantic are things we do also.
