I expect that if I ran the UL file number on the cable, it would come back to some company in China...

Or if it came back "not found". Then for sure you would know it came from China.

I have used Hitachi Outdoor Cat 5e and it is pretty nice stuff

It looks like they are coming out with an Industrial ruggedized Cat 5e patch cable that looks pretty handy too. I don't know if I'll ever use it but, it is nice to know it exists.

No Cat3 stuff for small count outdoor though frown

I like the way they proclaim "Suitable for Direct Burial, Lashed Aerial, Duct and Underground Conduit Applications"- like you are going to do outside plant with the stuff. OK geeks, get out your stringer truck, hardhats and lasher and hang that 200 feet 'cuz that's about all you are going to get with ethernet.

Then again sparkie will use it for everything.

No Cat3 stuff for small count outdoor though

That's ALWAYS been available in 6 pair on up.

Back to MoCA, here is some technical information on the MoCA 1.1 spec. that may answer some of the questions about why coax is used and not a standard network.

I'm still looking for how, with FiOS, MoCA is carried on the coax along with the digital video carriers. That would have an impact on future questions people will have about cable lengths and amplifiers.

I expect the reason that coax is used and not a standard Ethernet network is that the coax already exists in most cases & the STBs are already connected with coax. A standard Ethernet network would add complexity and the need to run additional cable.

I am an early adopter of Fios in our area. I had Data before TV was available. At the time Verizon supplied me with a D-Link router. When TV was made available they installed a NIM next to my router. It has a 10BaseT network connection and a Coax connection. the coax connects to the coaxes that goto the tv boxes via a splitter. If I unplug the Nim from either the network or the coax the on-demand channels don't work and eventually the guide does not work because it is not updated. Newer installations in our area include an Actiontec wireless Router that has both the WAN ana Coax ports on it to do away with the NIM .

Well, if you look at this you could interpret it to support either of our arguments. Actiontec MoCA adapter (bridge)

It does answer my question about what the MoCA data carrier is. It's above the 1000Mhz upper frequency maximum for CATV at 1125-1525Mhz. That means it's use is limited to being used with cable TV and not satellite on the same coax. It also limits the size of the system in the house and length of cables to an extent.

Awhile back we had a question about running several hundred feet of cable to an out building to supply it with FiOS from the main house. This is not something that is easily done beause of the MoCA carrier.
