That looks so much like the basement of the admin building of a college in Va. I had to reinstall a Mitel SX-200 years ago. It was a hugh mess. The picture reminds me of the way I found the place, not the way I left it.

Went to go do a quick install Friday afternoon. Only 8 phones so I thought I would be out early.....

No such luck!

I had to turn this:

Into this:

I started around 2pm and left at 6pm. Booo.

Very nice. It looks a lot like most of my small installations, right down to the shelf for the router and UPS.

Any time I do a dropped ceiling for myself or help my friends put one up, or have a chance to intervene during the construction of an office, I use a method that is a little bit strange, but helps down the road.

At the edge of the ceiling where the equipment is going to be, I first install pieces of 1" by 2" or wider pine board, painted white, leaving a two inch space every foot or so. The ceiling edge support mounts against this instead of right against the wall.

This allows the wires to come down the wall through little "tunnels" without having to notch the metal angle support, and cutting into the edge of the tiles.

Used NEC IPK. People are being pretty frugal lately. Small doctor's office so it will last them forever.

If I had a little more time I would have dressed the cable a little nicer, but this was an unexpected surprise. My work ticket was to install the system and phones in a pre-cabled office... yeah... ummm.... about that cabling... haha

If I don't put shelf in the IT guy will just balance his stuff on top of my PBX.

How hard is it to put up a small shelf... ?? He will still probably drape his power cables across the front of my PBX and use different colored 15' patch cords. Oye!

Interesting method, Arthur. Makes sense when I visualize it!
I'm sure the IT guy will also take your power strip, and it will end up on the floor. frown

Very good getting it done in four hours Doghart. It must have taken some time to get over the shock!

Arthur: In those situations, I try real hard to get in before the ceiling guy gets there and mount a couple of 2 inch pvc conduits for raceways. Then they have to cut around me.

Dog, I hear you on the shelf. I put them in for other's stuff, and my own sanity. I hate a sloppy room, after I've taken the trouble to do a nice job.

I often leave one blue (modem-to-router) and 12 white patch cords of the proper length for self-preservation. If the "built on site" patch cords fail, who do you suspect will get the first angry phone call? So, I spend an extra $20 and leave the cords ready to plug into the router.

Jim, re: sleeves...that works, too. Good idea.

A 183A1 backboard coupled with a 198A would have easily gotten you out of there 30 minutes earlier. Just sayin' wink

I still don't see how you didn't pull all of your hair out and still get it done in four hours with what you had to start with.

Arthur, while I like your mindset about planning ahead, we are forbidden from installing anything made of wood in a commercial environment here. Fire-retardant plywood is permitted, but we can't paint it so that the certification stamps are permanently visible. That stuff is hard as a rock when it comes to screws!
