It's been attempted, unfortunately things are "within specifications", and thus the PUC can no nothing.

So with the AC power off in the whole area, you still had hum?

Three possible explanations for this:

1] There is an HV transmission line nearby, and it is the source of the hum, rather than local primary/secondary distribution power lines.

2] The hum is originating from the Telco's own equipment, possibly powered by an always-on inverter type UPS system.

3] The hum is not coming from AC power at all, but is instead the very thrum of mother earth herself, sometimes called "The Music of the Spheres." Perhaps you are over top a rich vein of iron ore, which is resonating in tune with earth's magnetic buzz? If this is the case, all is not lost. The earth's magnetic field is in a period of great turmoil, and it has been suggested that it may "flip" soon. When this happens, the Northerly-polarized buzz you hear now will be replaced by a warm Southern Hemisphere hum, and you will have an overwhelming urge to go to the beach and get naked. laugh

Jim - There is a HV line that crosses the telephone line (like this: +) about 5 miles from my house, however, there are numerous houses between there and me that do not have hum on their lines.

Of course, your point two is also a question I've raised to the telco (line-card power supply, etc) but they swear up and down that can't be it.

I'm afraid that wouldn't stop me! That sounds like a cop-out caused by the fact that 'most' PUC's boards have retired... you guessed it, utility honchos, that are protecting their own, oh, and their own retirement, by making sure no excess money is spent on maintanance and repair!

Of course, I'm retired and I have time to sit on hold and raise hades with PUC folks, and of course, my legislators and the governors office. argue :bang:

I did file something with the state Attorney General, and now we have decent DSL, which allows our VoIP to run well.... I now work for a cellular carrier - so off to Tellular devices I go I believe.
