Cepega,

They are adapters for early trimline phones [and some others], to allow the use of a handset cord with the standard 4P4C modular plugs. I will leave it to others to comment on whether the asking price is reasonable or not.

Here is page with all the gory details:

Jeff, indeed it is, and note that a good bit of the information contained was furnished by Mr. Arthur P. Bloom of The Shelter Island Telephone Company.

On a side note, I suppose we should be grateful that the ebay seller linked in the original post didn't use entirely fictional Federal Specification numbers like "RJ7" or "RJ9" to describe the standard 4P4C handset cord plugs. Then I would have had to climb up on my soapbox, and nobody wants to see that.

the original trimline telephone handsets connected to their base via especially shaped five conductor hand set cords. five leads to accomodate party line service plus ac power for the lamp in the handset. when modular base and handset cords for the other weco telephones became popular, technicians who could use the four conductor hand set cords would have to use an adaptor to convert the larger five conductor jacks on the base and handset to allow the smaller cord to be used. eventually newer models of trimlines were manufactured with today's standard four conductor jacks. you may still see the larger plug ended cords on some collectable models.
