Anyone have any luck using a Magic JackGO for an alarm system? Tried hooking it up today for a client at his request and when we had the alarm company check the connection, it wasn't working. Told we need an IP module as Kagic JackGo is on a different frequency. This was supposedly confirmed by another company.

Different frequency??

When you call that thing doesn't the caller have to dial Magic Jack Central then enter a code to get to that jack? How do you think the alarm company is going to do that?

My brother works on alarms every day and it's tough getting the alarm to work though any VoIP service. It is really hit and miss. As he explained it, alarm systems use DTMF codes to transmit the alarm signal, and the signaling gets a bit messed up in the conversion to VoIP, especially if they use audio compression.

The big alarm companies such as ADT will bless the VoIP lines from cable companies, but put a red flag on Magic Jack and Vonage.

Many alarm companies have modules that can transmit the alarm signal to the central station through the Internet without dialing up, or they also have alarm service though cellular. In both cases they will charge for the extra module plus an additional monthly fee.

ADT for example has a Pulse system that works over the Internet. Another advantage of the Pulse system is the ability to use a mobile app to arm and disarm the system and get entry reports (for an additional fee).

Your client is trying to ditch the expensive POTS line I think.

Have you considered a cellular communicator like Telguard?

It still cost money but it should be a lot less then a standard phone line.

There are very few manufactures that will support systems on VOIP lines of any kind. There are options out there though, like GSM or the Connect2go module.
