Bringing this back to life - had a small job today, run a cable from the first floor phone room (where the building management's internet comes) in through the second and third floor, into part of a vacant suite now used as a conference room:

This is the server room for the rest of the space that was not vacated - I was trying to see where the existing cables were terminated:

Dex, around here they are used exclusively to mark special circuits. The block in the first pic is all Hi-cap.

I think that the color code specified yellow to indicate special circuits. Does the red box in the second photo have something to do with the fire alarm system?

Yep. Some kind of power supply or extender. I have never seen yellow markers used anywhere in Ohio (AT&T territory)

All T-1, T-3 PRI, etc. circuits are identified, here, with dual red bridging clips. I think all the orange, yellow and blue have been lost, stolen or otherwise used for other than telephone circuit identifying.

Jeff.....What a mess. However, not unusual. We see a lot of that around here. This is typically what happens when you get non-telephone crafts people, in a hurry, and not knowing or caring how a properly laid out main frame should look.

Yes, the red box is a Distributed Power Module for the Fire Alarm system and is used for the notifications circuits.

I would say it's a Silent Knight 5400 series one by the look of the logo in the bottom right.

I believe you are right. The building has a Simplex panel with Gentex horn strobes.

I had to work in this box a couple years ago and sorted out the blue group. Don't know if I could get the other groups without cutting more sheath. I guess that wasn't a priority when the security guys installed this. They were using 2 pair out of 100, so I liberated a 25 pair group for some phones. I pulled the pairs off the 66 block and scotchloked them to my cable. Interesting color code if you zoom in on the blocks. And I don't know who punched down in the last picture. There is so much wrong in these it makes me shudder.
