I don't do much work in the Hospitality industry. However I have a Mitel SX200 ICP CXi that we need to connect to a RoomMaster by InnQuest PMS with full funtionality, call accounting, voice mail, and room status. A more experienced Mitel tech told me I need a LAN 232 Trio ethernet to (3) serial port device to one of the Controller's ports. The RoomMaster technician told me the best way was to provide an ethernet connection to the customer's network and let him know what the IP addresses are. Can anyone offer some guidence on this? I am a very experienced telephone man who doesn't fully understand PMS and IP addresses.

Yes you need to connect via ip to 3 different ports on the Mitel. 1 for smdr, 1 for voice mail and 1 for PMS. Of course these may need to be programmed, and you must have the pms/lodging option If the PMS system can connect to the ports via telnet, you don't need the 3 or trio ip to serial converters. The handbook and manual has details on setting up iPocket232 devices.

An IP address is how computers identify each other on a network. They will be four numbers separated by dots. Each number is between 0 and 255. So 192.168.0.1 is an example, or 10.10.100.244 is another.

You can find out the IP address of a computer you are using by opening a command prompt (the old white-on-black screen where you type commands) and typing IPCONFIG

The default IPs and "Port numbers" for the Mitel will be listed in the manual. you can also find them in CDE. As John said, you have to have the option that allows the ICP to talk to PMS. If the PMS tech can set it up to talk to the PMS through the network, then that's all you need.

If you have to convert to Serial for PMS etc., then you'll need to know the expected Baud, Parity, etc.

In general, on check-in the PMS system tells the ICP to allow calls from the room. It also tells the ICP (on a different "port") to clear the old mailbox for that room and set up a new one. Then, when phone calls are made from the room phone, the ICP tells the Call Accounting system, which figures out the pricing and tells the PMS what to charge the guest.
