Hi; I am going out Friday to give an estimate to extend 5 DS0 10mps about a hundred feet that Verizon did not extend all the way to customers suite.

Before I go out would love to know what kind of wires are needed. Is this cat 5 or thin coax? Shielded two pair or ?

This is all the info I have so far:

G knows why verizon doesnt completed jobs. What good is delivering 5 circuits in a multi tenant building and leaving it in the POE room? more work for me but it isnt right.

Hated to comment on this one, but has anyone extended a DS0? O.K. maybe a 56K circuit. What I don't understand is if it's 5 DS1 circuits, how does Verizon get 10MBPS?

A DS0 is a circuit having a bandwidth of either 56K (AMI) or 64K (B8ZS).

Bundled 10MPS? I guess they're putting 2MBS on each of the 5 circuits. Probably DSL.

Hatteras seems to be a company that makes boxes that convert carrier to ethernet so you get an ethernet ready signal without going through a router.

I would run 6 pair cat 3 if it's DS0.

Like my two esteemed collogues above the math doesn’t add up to me here either… 5 DS0 level circuits for 10 Mb. … Is this a metro Ethernet product offering maybe? 10 Meg pipe with 5 virtuals? :shrug:

The math had my brain spinning wheels as well. I did some mining and found that the "Hatteras equipment" is used for implementing 10MBPS "Ethernet over Copper". Here\'s a link.

So, do you extend the 5 DS0s or does Verizon mount the Hattera's box at he POE and you extend the ethernet side with a single CAT5?

The technology in question is most likely a carrier or metro ethernet service offering from the ILEC. If the terminating equipment is Hatteras Networks, it is most likely the HN-418 model for native ethernet over copper. The HN-418 uses bonded single-pair G.SHDSL links to achieve the desired bandwidth. G.SHDSL technology uses a 16-level TC-PAM modulation to achieve up to 2.3mbps per pair relative to distance and gauge. 32 TC-PAM can offer up to 5.7mbps per link, but it is much less common. The service is designed end-to-end by an osp engineer. Wherever the design says to place the Hatteras, that is where it will be placed by the technician. As far as extending service into your suite, the hand-off to you is standard ethernet. You can use whatever twisted pair cabling and wiring scheme(568-A/568-B) you want as long as you stay under the maximum distance for said cabling per ethernet over twisted pair standards. My only advice would be to use a crossover cable between the Hatteras and your router because their is a known issue with the Hatteras units not linking up with certain router interfaces at full-duplex. Do not change mdi settings at either end, just place the x-over cable.
