Is there a maximum number of DID numbers that can be ported over a T1?

Never had the problem. If you have tooooo many, you'll start getting busys for callers because all 24 channels are tied up. Then you just add another T1! smile (Show Me The Money)

Right it has more to do with traffic than the number.

While there is technically no limit, the manner in which exchange codes are being sold today (blocks of 1,000 numbers rather than 10,000) changes things dramatically. Most service providers these days aren't buying a full 10K like the old days, so you may be hard-pressed to find one that has a large number of DID blocks just sitting there.

We have several real estate companies here that give each agent a personal DID, plus they maintain a reasonable number of spares due to high turnover. The last time I checked, one of them has 640 DIDs riding on one PRI. The another one has about 300. It can be done, but with real estate, the per-number traffic is fairly low.

Each T-1 has 24 channels available. The real question is, how many DID numbers can be supported on a Trunk (channel)?

Like all trafficking questions, the answer is affected by two main points- how busy is the site (how many calls and of what duration) and how many trunks are allocated.

The more trunks you allocate, the more numbers you can support.

100 numbers can easily be supported on 10-15 trunks, but 5000 numbers can easily be supported on 150-200 trunks! though to be honest, part of this formula is because as an organization gets larger (5000 people in one location) more and more of it's calls become internal.

Your carrier should be able to give you trafficking information, including Busy-Hour statistics that will help you decide on how many channels you need.
