I've managed to get it mostly working, but your better off using the windows telnet (assuming your connecting via IP)

just have to make it not send cr/lf when you hit enter as the svmi treats it as hitting enter twice

Run telnet without specifying a host name. This will open it in "interactive mode".
At the Microsoft Telnet> prompt, type:
unset crlf
and press ENTER.
At the Microsoft Telnet> prompt, type:
o (ip address of SVMI)

When using telnet on a default system, what's the user name ?

I've found that you should use code page 437 (CP437) when connecting with Putty. It displays correctly like Hyperterminal. I'll post some screen shots of my settings.
