I have never seen fiber splicing of a backbone cable before. This video is really something to watch. How much do you think this fusion splicer would cost? What do these techs usually make?
I didn't look at video but fusion splicing has been around forever. Siecor (Siemens and Corning) which no longer exists, did use a fusion splicer designed in Germany. Now the Japanese have the fast units.
Depending on the unit, the costs could be anywhere from about $20K to $60K. The operators make about the same money as a copper splicer.
Fusion splicing "melts" the glass together in X, Y, and Z angles while maintaining a pressure on the fiber to force it together. Really not much for the operator to do but watch the TV and push the button.
I ran a crew of fiber splicers here in the Apple for a couple of years during the dot-com era. We used mostly Sumitomo machines that, at the time cost about $50K. My guys made real good money but worked their butts off. There was a little pole work in the outer boros but most was in Manholes in Manhattan. Dark, Dirty and Dangerous.
You earned your $. Neatness and a real attention to detail were critical. Being an Obsessive-Compulsive was actually an advantage.
