Since I REALLY do not want to wrap or unwrap anymore pins, could I plug my San/Bar FM tuner card in slot 3 and get MOH?
I was thinking slot 3 because now slot 4 is occupied by my 401A card.
Also, on the FM tuner card, there are 3 switches I don't understand. There's a SP/ON, AFC/ON, and EXT/ANT switch.
Don't know what to set to what etc?
Once again, you guys are the best!
Sure, you can do that. Just make sure pins 3 and 18 are connected to the line card's pins 3 and 18. As for the switches:
SP/ON controls the internal speaker so you can hear it while tuning in a station. This would normally be left off.
AFC/ON controls automatic frequency control to keep stations from "drifting".
EXT/ANT allows you to use the cards internal antenna or to connect an external one.
Cool! I'll try it out now!
Well, I just tried it out. Couldn't hear anything. Pins 3/18 are connected to AG/AB respectively.
The meter is flicking up and down as if recieving something, but no radio on the other end.
WOW!!! Well, it started working (Ithink it needed to warm-up, but then I got SMOKE coming out of it. Definetly not a good sign! Might be short somewhere.
There seems to be some kind of 500 ohm varistor on the back of the card. It looks like the problem was coming from there.
The smoke comes when I put a call on hold, and either pins 17 or 18 heat up big time. 18 is AB, 17 is BB.
You can't have 24 volts on pins 3/18! They are for music only. By having 24 volts on them, you may have fried the 4201 card.
I don't think I fried the card. So remove pins 3/18 from AG/AB respectively?
Yes, pin 3 from slot one goes to pin 3 of slot three. Pin 18 from slot one goes to pin 18 of slot three. That should be all you need to do.
OK, so the radio plays when I have the external speaker on, but when I switch the speaker off and call line 1 and put the call on hold, I don't hear anything.
But these are K400E line cards. Wasn't there some kind of jumper conifguration I needed to do? I know one of the jumpers had to be moved from 23 to 12.
As far as the pins are concerned, there is now only two wires connecting 3line3 to 3line1, and 18line3 to 18line1.
It works!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! I had to put 18line3 on 18line1, but 3line3 had to go to 14line1, and I had to switch the jumper, and now I have sweet music to my ears

Ahhh, the A-Team. Good memories
Those guys got their training in Vietnam, or so the story line went. And you could tell. 15000 rounds expended and nobody hurt! If I remember correctly, that was about how many rounds were expended per enemy causulty. John C.
CAT6, your main problem was that you are mixing Sanbar and ITT cards in a WE box - all similar, but with their own quirks.
As you've noted, the sanbar tuner outputs MOH on 3 & 18; and the Sanbar line card (4200 ?) that I looked at was set up to input MOH on 3 & 18.
The ITT K400E was set up with a jumper to accept MOH from pin 18 to either tip (12 or 14).
The WE shoebox on the other hand was designed for simple intercom without MOH, so they fed 24volts to 3 & 18 for the 401 Manual intercom card.
John,
The "shoot at anything in a 200 yard radius and hope you hit something" method.
Possible if you're as rich as the US military is (was?). The VC and NVA on the other hand counted out their ammo one bullet at a time. Being frugal is a good thing.
JK,
Yeah, it's a bit of a telecom Long Island Iced Tea, but they're all working together in relative harmony (keeping my fingers crossed). Almost fried a few components (and myself!) trying to get there, but I made it in the end. Phew.
In looking for something else (isn't that how all searches start and end?) I have discovered an old binder full of SanBar practices. Since SanBar is no longer a viable corporation, it's safe to offer copies of these SBP's to anyone who needs to see them. No charge for the copies, just the postage.

Arthur -
Thank you very much for the offer! And I have to say I got quite the rush looking at some of those cards - Line Transfer & Delayed Ring Transfer especially. I remember troubleshooting a problem that turned out to be one of those cards.
Thanks again,
Sam
Wow, thank you for the offer, Arthur. I will definitely keep those in mind.
Anybody remember the Sanbar 4000 series card "For Government Use Only"? It was designed to prevent wiretapping. I put them in for the FBI.
