Phone companies told the CRTC that 636 of their payphones weren't used even once in the last 13 months and that about 10,000 phones were taking in less than 50 cents a day.

Not surprising that no one is using payphones anymore... I always hated payphones as they always seemed gross to me. Using a public phone was no different that using a pubic toilet.

Back in the 80's I lived in downtown Toronto and there were Bell payphones everywhere... banks and banks of them... these days it's like finding a dinosaur.
Most of the payphones here in New Zealand have had WiFi units added to them to give customers of Spark NZ up to 1gig / day of free WiFi. Just need to be on a prepay or postpay plan of $19 or greater per month..
