anyone have some ideas on the best way to attach a wooden backboard (for a small KSU) to a wall that is covered with tiles? i don't want to crack these tiles, they're 8" square tiles.

thanks

I have heard that if you put tape over where you want to drill holes, then it will reduce cracking when you drill holes and then put screws in.
Maybe also you can try using furring strips to attach to the tile, and use shorter screws to attach the backboard to the strips.

They make tile drill bits, put tape over the holes to be made as jeff said, use a stud finder and put the holes into them.

Drill in the corner where the tiles meat into the grout. By doing this there is les damage done to tiles if you need to remove system latter on down the road. I used toggle bolts to hold plywood in place.

Good Luck!!

If all else fails, use a BFH.

yes, i went between the tiles and used a wall anchor that expands when a screw is inserted.

thanks for your advice on the tape, after a little google search i found the same.

i tried going through the tile, my concrete drill bit was glowing after that.

That ceramic tile can be pretty tough to get through. A little tidbit for you guys: The military uses ceramic tile as some of it's armor layers on an M1 Abrams tank. When I was in Desert Storm, we used to joke about our tanks using kitchen tiles to protect us.
