I abandoned windows for Linux a while back for security issues and the cost of software. But even before that I abandoned Internet Explorer for Firefox because of HUGE security issues. For those of you that might use the browser interface instead of telnet for the 200 ICP I couldn't get the java plugin on my Linux Ubuntu to get recognized by Mitel but I found the browser OPERA works well because it doesn't use a java plugin but rather the system loaded java. It's pretty secure, too - at least more so than IE.

Unfortunately the 3300 looks for IE 6 or higher, but I am trying to find a way around that as well.

Have you tried to edit the site preferences and use the "mask as" option to spoof IE 6 ?

Im not an Opera user but i remember that it has this feature.

Here are some links to knowledge base articles i found on the opera site.

hope it helps.

I have also been trying to get the java plugin working for firefox under Linux. no luck so far. The browser hangs right after the login page.

Opera actually works fine for 200 ICP browser, but 3300 requires IE 6 or above and I haven't been able to get any plugins on any browser to work. Only can use IE6 under WINE in Linux

changing to linux because of security issues is kind of silly. I can root a linux box with buffer overflows just as easily as a windows one. if not easier. It all comes down to how well you secure your system and keep it patched. If you can run a tight ship as a linux admin, thats the way to go. I prefer it as a server os myself. There are still inherent risks however.

You'll also find it's not just the browser itself per se that is being exploited. it's the components within, for instance Flash and PDF had a huge problem, which was just recently patched.

The web page on the ICP uses a java applet. Java is java, it doesn't care what broswer you use.

If you can get into the 3300 ICP with anything other than IE then I would be happy to hear about it. I must disagree with you on the security issue on several levels. First, since a vast majority of the PCs in the world run on Windows a vast majority of malevolent code written targets that operating system. Second, Windows uses its "system registry" which is extremely vulnerable - Unix systems don't have one. Third, Microsoft builds in back doors so they can access windows systems when they are on line. Unix systems do not have that built in. Fourth, while I agree if you are very computer savvy you can attain a high level of security with windows - most pc users are not and so that makes their systems very vulnerable.

And yes I understand the whole browser/plugin relationship.

I have to admit it takes a willingness to be a little more hands on to use Linux (or Unix based systems) but the advantages are huge in my opinion. Plus you have the added advantage of operating system and most software being free.

oh yes, gnu is nice. I'm a long time avid *nix user myself. aside from not being able to play my 3D multiplayer games, I use it quite religiously. I just mean it's not necessarily more secure. Its a different kind of threat, instead of trojans, spyware, and remote buffer overflows to lets say WebDAV, its a lot more directed. OpenSSL vulnerabilities and the like are pretty common. Just be sure to keep it updated, because all one has to do is google for an exploit and root the boxen exploiting an old bug.
