Is it just me or is this site experiencing problems? I keep getting "timed out" errors.

It is not just here, I have noticed it on other sites as well.

2 out of 5 times I click onto topics, I get an unavailable error. Also, many times the posts don't include the posting date, it says "posted" but no date. It seems more like a server-end issue than a DNS issue.

I agree that it's a server-side issue, I'm seeing the same behavior.

I run a local caching nameserver, so once my system has resolved the address the first time, all subsequent queries are handled locally until the TTL on the DNS record expires, which pretty much rules out a flaky nameserver.

Running MTR (continuous ping/traceroute) shows minimal packet loss along the path (0.4% end-end),
and minimal deviation in RTT. (133ms stddev, 274ms avg rtt) measured over 38 minutes @ 1pps.
(9 packets dropped out of 2300 sent)

path taken was sonic.net -> equinix -> alternet -> sprintlink -> mvdsl.

Of the last 8 pages I opened, the first 4 all timed out the first time, and one timed out a second time. the next group of four, one timed out six times in a row, and another timed out four times in a row..

Did you change your ISP, your server or it just grew the problem suddenly?

It seems like it just pops through sometimes yet most of the time it times out and you have to back up a page and try again. Its not like it is going to give us a heart attack.

Tantivy, would you say you know enough about this stuff to be a guru or a geek. I'm impressed, I wouldn't know a MTR from a RTT.

MTR is My (or Matt's) Traceroute.. a really handy application that is a cross between ping and traceroute..

RTT is round trip time. the length of time it takes for a ping to make it from the sending computer to the destination, and back.

stddev is standard deviation.. the difference between the lowest/average/highest RTT based on 95%?? of the packets.

pps == packets per second.

I agree. Tell your ISP to reboot the webserver. I hope it's not running Micro$oft Winblows.
