I will be attempting to install a call accounting system to the front desk of a hotel. The cable run is 150 ft. Is cat 5e a acceptable media or should I use a Belden 9933 cable. Also was SMDR a standard feature or will I need hardware. Vintage 1982 Thanks

Even on the old analog systems SMDR was a standard feature, just needed to have programming set up to generate the call records. CAT 5e or CAT 3 usually work just fine. Has there ever been call accounting on this before?

25 pin RS232. Make sure you have a data analyzer, one of the kind with 6-8 LED's is entirely adequate.

I can never remember whether it's 2 or 3 for transmit or receive, and whether its 5 or 7 for ground, so we sometimes cheat, and short 2-3 and 5-7 at each end of the cable. Works pretty well.
Note the baud/parity of the Mitel port and match it for the Call Accounting device and printer (if serial).

25 Pin Connector 9 Pin Connector 2 = Transmit 2 = Transmit 3 = Receive 3 = Receive 7 = Signal Ground 5 = Signal Ground
So connect 2 to 3, 3 to 2, 7 to 5
3 wires all you need. I have ran SMDR on Cat 3 for over 300 ft with no problem.
