I have a mitel SX200 ICP MX system in a nursing home that has been operating well for the past 5 or 6 years. A couple of months ago, the customer noticed that the message waiting lamps on both digital and ip sets no longer would flash to indicate new messages. I cannot figure out why this would have stopped working suddenly other than damage to the system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you using for voice mail? I've seen a poor connection to the last port on an external voice mail system cause this on many systems since that port is usually the one the executes the message notification string.

You need to check the COS of the phones that are having this issue and make sure the programming has not changed. Also, if you are using Mitel integrated VM, you need to check to see how the notification is programmed. One other thing to look at is the time on the system. Make sure the time on the system is correct.

Okay, first question: Any changes in programming, and especially classes of service? This would be something like, "We don't want residents to be able to forward their phones any more," or "We want all/some/none-of-the residents to be able to conference their phones."

2.) Are all of the affected sets in the same bay?

3.) Are most of the affected sets on one or two cards?

4.) Are the affected sets in a remote building from the main building or the building containing the MPOE and MDF?

5.) What lightning protection, if any, is in use between buildings?

to telephone guy:

1. No programming has changed at all. The system has worked fine up until now.

2. and 3. The sets are on different bays. This system has 2 asu's and an EL expansion cabinet that house the analog trunks as well as the digital station cards. All of the phones (that is Ip and Digital) are affected by this problem. (the analog stations do not utilize message waiting as each resident supplies their own analog phone.

4. There are no remote buildings. the entire facility is housed under one roof.

5. The system controller, el cabine, both ASU's and the rack housing them are connected with a solid copper ground bar that is connected directly to an 8' earth ground rod. In addition, all of the system components are powered by a tripp lite battery backup.

Well, to echo RCAman, check notifications on the affected mailboxes and make sure that they are set to notify the correct extensions, that is, no one has redirected notifications to the Phillipines.

If it's all in one building, then a lightning arrestor is not likely the problem. If it's different bays, then a funky power supply module is out. Also probably not a bad DNIC card.

Could still be a cabling issue, but it's highly unlikely given that presentation of the issue.

RCAman's got the right picture, I think: either COS setting or voicemail notification. Or time settings, maybe, but that should just give delayed messages.

So only the admin sets use voice mail is that correct? Has the call forwarding been cancelled? Are they truly getting messages on their phones? Maybe change from lamp indication to ring on those sets to see if they are getting notification at all. Re-boot?
