I had a NEC dealer come out ant install a caller ID daugher board for my 28I phone system. Immediately our voice mail went to pot. The phone would ring 4 times and attempt to roll over to vm but then it would stall and hang up. As as last resort the technician removed the daugher board and the voice mail once again began to work but it now answers with "Please try again" before the rest of the greating! How is this corrected?

He needs to turn off the Caller ID to voicemail in the 28i. Before digital integration the i-series could trnsfer DTMF to the voicemail to pass on caller ID. You need to get rid of that being passed.

I have the manual but it is very overwhelming. Is this something I can do on my own? If so, could you tell me how?

Not really. Without looking at the flow chart and doing the steps it's almost impossible for me to type every minute detail. I would suggest getting an i-series tech to come fix that.
