We've recently installed a Startalk Flash 4 on our 1994-vintage Merdian system (replacing an old HD-based StarTalk). Some of our users are very picky and demanding, and they own the company, so their concerns are my concerns. I've got issues with sound quality (the lower sample rate of the flash-based system) as well as functionality (reduced CoS options in particular). Assuming none of you know of any tricks to make the damn thing sound better, what non-Nortel options could I look at for voice mail (i.e., VoiceGate, Amanda, etc.)

We've got about 40-50 users on voicemail, so it doesn't have to be big, but it should probably be HD based, and allow for some mailboxes to keep lots of messages around for a long time. Suggestions?

The sound quality should be ok with the flash unless you have a defective unit. The flash unit only supports 48 mailboxes with 180 minutes of storage so you are so limited here. I will suggest try to interface with a NAM voice mail (Its HD based) or even a new system with new VM and new technology.Thats my opinion.

I have installed several Nams behind older Nortels using the DS-30 units. All use full AA so this may be a viable solution.

I don't believe the Amanda works on anything past R1T1 but it is a nice unit up to there.

It really would be time to upgrade to a 0x32 with 6.1 (7 has bugs still) and a new NAM.

They want it their way, they should be able to pay to upgrade the ksu and voicemail, you can sell the flash to someone else and they don't have to replace all the phones.

Give them two choices, keep the flash or here is the price to use a nam, which includes upgrading the ksu. They will bite the bullet or do without what they want and if the company is profitable......

I'm supprised you are having complaints about the sound quality on the Flash, most users think they are better than anything they ever had. Like samh says, you might have a defective unit.

RE: the sound quality. Everything seems clipped and hollow - like it is recording everything with very little data sampling. If you have experience with these units and wouldn't mind giving it a call to see if it sounds different, I'd appreciate it. Just e-mail or PM me.

You should have clean sound on the flash.

D/A or A/D converter is defective. You might try to default and reinstall before replacing.
