Yes, check to make sure that Handsfree didn't get muted. If the indicator light next to the handsfree button is flashing, then it is muted. If it is solid, then it is simply a microphone issue. Replace the set and you should be good to go.

Speakers will always work. But you have to program Handsfree. I believe that NO handsfree is the default. Speaker will always work.

It turned out to be that the hole for the mic was clogged with dust. The speakerphone function worked (we had it programmed correctly in terminals/sets/capabilities, but it just wasn't as good as they expected. I blew it out with canned air and it worked just fine.
It is pretty sad that I had to jump through so many hoops with issues for a customer with existing sets. Obviously, they didn't have a very tidy office at their prior location. Thanks for all of the help here as usual.
