Should a dedicated fax line bypass the KSU altogether or is it OK to wire it as an extension via the KSU and have the option of using the line as a voice rollover for other extensions?

Thanks for any advice.

Hal

It is fine to have going through system and use the line for out going calls and have the incoming line go to the fax.
If you want it to be a rollover line on incoming call, you will have to get a disa/fax detect card.
If the fax is a busy one it is better left as dedicated line, but with e-mail now, faxs are hardly used.

I had not thought of that.

Thanks,

We put the fax on the 824 and turn on the DISA card for that line. A fax with a CNG tone goes directly to the fax machine, and we put an OGM on the card to dial 3 for fax and 1/0 to reach the regular phones.

A single port DISA/OGM card is included in the system.

I am having trouble with the fax line.

I have assigned extension 8 to the fax. Assigned CO 3 for incoming calls and outgoing calls for extension 8. Unchecked CO line options 4-8 for the system.

I get a busy signal after dialing the second number on an outgoing fax.

I am not dialing 9 on outgoing faxes. (Is that the problem?) We are not dialing 9 on any outgoing calls from any extensions. Everything else is working fine.

Thanks,

Hal

You can't use outgoing line preference on a single line set in an 824. You can use pickup dialing and, this is just a guess, you will have to do the following:

Go to 203 and change the timing to 1 second (ctrl-F 203 gets you there from the tool).
Go to 2.2 page 3 click set at ext 108 and insert 9 as the number to be dialed.

Your outbound faxes may have to start with a pause, since you can't insert a comma in the number string in the 824. I'll let you test that and let us know.

Thanks for the suggestion, Carl.

I tried just dialing 9 for outgoing faxes and that works just fine so I think I will stop there for now.

I found this over at AbleComm:

"You can program a single-line phone, fax or modem to automatically grab an outside line, instead of intercom. Use pickup dialing ("hot line dialing" -- section 1.3.50 in the operating menu. You can program a 9 to use the first available line, or 81 for line 1, 82 for line 2, etc."

That sounds like what I was looking for.

It would seem to me that 99% of purchasers of the 824 system would have a fax or two connected. I can't imagine that implementation would be too mysterious.

Thanks again for the suggestion,

Hal
