Reliable: Yes, very much so.
New/old compatibility: Yes, on most systems. Old phones on new systems, yes. New phones on old systems, mostly no.
Programmable from any set: No in general, only via one phone or laptop.
Voice Mail: All require laptop; current ones are USB-only, older ones are RS232. Many features are touch-tone programmable though, like names, etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE: KX- and DBS- systems are 100% NOT compatible. They are two different companies, just as different as Avaya and Nortel.
If you plan to only sell their supply house product line, you will be fine. Just expect them to drop products every year and when they do, they will vanish from the face of the earth as if they never existed. If you have a good relationship with your supply house rep, they may give you a tip about something being discontinued in advance to give you a chance to stock up. Trust me on this one.
If you plan to sign on as an authorized dealer, you had better meet your quota every quarter. They will cut you off completely for failure to meet quota. They DO NOT play around. Trust me on that one too.
Also, if you sign on as a Panasonic dealer, be prepared for weekend and night emergency calls from people seeking cordless phone batteries or tapes for answering machines. Panasonic will give their dealer's names on a Zip/postal code basis for any consumer call. They get a lot of calls and web traffic, so they don't really filter them. They just pass everything on to their dealers to handle.
Panasonic has great products but they are like the Mafia. You are either all-in or you are out. Take the commitment seriously.

We are in the process of dropping Panasonic due to quotas and the cost of certifications. We also got complaints that "end-user" feature programming is less than user-friendly.

I think the enduser programing is a lot easier now than it was on the TD!

I agree with Jojon, thing is give a user the right phone. if they will be paging, call pick up 2 way record and so on, they will need at least the 7630 telephone, plus the phone assistant software is very handy.

Any TDA without displays is dumb, it's only about 15 bucks more. Pann user guide is bad. Wish they would come out with CD user guide like they had for the KXTD, that was great.
