People of said here and elsewhere that the Toshiba system cannot be behind an NAT when setting up the IP system. What is the correct system setup assuming one has an office network in addition to the phone system?

If you want to connect across the internet, you need the LIPU or BIPU to have a public IP address. The Phones can be behind NAT, but not the IP card in the system.
Many people set up 2 IP cards, one with an internal IP, and one with an external public IP. We generally put the LIPU in front of all the Firewall and routers on the WAN side to avoid conflicts. I've heard of some routers and firewalls blocking the audio path.

Some of the newer low-end Linksys routers block voice, if you're using Linksys go with the next model up. Put the LIPU on its own address on the public side of your router if you have any IP phones out in the field.

Since I have connected up many computer networks, but no external IP phone networks, this might be a naive question. Would you start by connecting a cable modem to a hub? Then connect one side of the hub to the phone system and the other to a router/NAT?

Yes, from the hub directly to the IP card (BIPU-M or LIPU) but you need to have at least 2 public IP addresses asigned to you by your ISP. Business accounts often have up to 5, home accounts usually have only 1.
You will need the infomation about your Internet service, IP, Subnet, and Gateway, to enter into the BIPU or LIPU. You will also need to have a STATIC IP address.

Newtecky, Why _two_ public IPs? I know one for the LIPU but what's the other one for? (I'm trying to set up the same thing)

Hello All, fantastic that I found this forum on the week our new Toshiba LIPU system is being installed. So from what I've just read you can't park your LIPU on the inside of the LAN and punch proper port forwarding hols through your firewall for access from the Internet? We're just adding LIPU to an existing Toshiba system and plan to keep the majority of the VOIP handsets inside the LAN. However I have a remote office where I would like to park 3 handsets that will connect back to head office via the internet. I understand the suggestion of two cards but that sounds a bit primitive? Why can't one card exist inside the LAN with proper firewall configuration from the outside? What ports does the IPU use for traffic, cause I would like to try it my way before resorting to the two card scenario.

Aaren, to the board. For IP phones to connect from outside, the LIPU can't be behind a NAT router, but can be behind a firewall like the Sonicwall TZ150. Personally, I'd set up your remote office with a VPN to your main office and keep the LIPU on the inside.
