I'm normally a Asterisk & Comdial guy, but I'm getting my feet a bit wet with Toshiba hardware.

I have a site that currently has a DK280 PBX with 35 DKT2020 phones and 14 analog lines, 2 of which are fax. We're looking at providing the 12 voice lines via SIP to the site arnd are looking at our options.

I know I can provide 12 analog lines with something like a Linksys SPA8000, but it seems that Toshiba has IP enabled PBXes. Do these PBXes support SIP trunking at all, and if so, what hardware would I need to avoid having to purchase new phones?

Toshiba just released SIP trunking 2 days ago. You would definately not get SIP with a DK280. You would need at least a CIX 100 processor and cabinet, with an expansion cabinet, plus an MIPU16 IP card with the latest software and firmware (as of 12/12/07). The phones and PDKU cards (or BDKU) in the system can be re-used. You can have a max of 8 cards in a CIX-100 with expansion cabinet. More then that, you would need a CIX-670.

We are testing at our office now. There is limited compatability with SIP trunking. It should work with C-Beyond and I believe Broadsoft. Future releases should add more combatibility.

Hmm... Do you have any information on how the SIP trunking is implemented? Documentation on it would be great, but I don't think I'd be able to get my hands on that... BTW, we are using Asterisk on the other end to terminate calls onto a PRI...

No matter how you do it, a Toshiba dealer would have to be involved. You would need a new processor and cabinet, either a CIX-100 or a CIX-670. Everything would have to be programmed from scratch, since you can't copy DK programming onto a CIX system.

You would also need licensing for both the ports (above 32 ports for a CIX-100, 64 for a CIX-670) and SIP trunking. Those must be purchased from a Toshiba dealer.


In the system, you would need an MIPU card, which is the IP card. This would provide your connection to the SIP trunks, and this card can also do IP phones, and IP QSIG to another Toshiba system.

On the plus side, you could have this new system running, tested with the SIP trunks, running next to their existing system until the cut.

I have no idea if you could connect this system thru SIP trunks to an Asterisk box. That is something our office may try. We have connected Shortel and Toshiba with a PRI in the past. I'll bring it up.

I'm not sure how much info about SIP truning is out yet. There is a How-to manual on setting them up with C-Beyond or Broadsoft.

On the plus side, yes they can keep all their existing phones provided they are in the DKT series, not EKT.
