That's just a protector, pre-dating 1984 when network interfaces became mandatory. Call Verizon and tell them that you want them to come out and install a network interface. They can't charge you for this as it is required of all telcos. That's not going to resolve your problem, but it needs to be done if you are going to be doing your own troubleshooting.

Thanks for letting us know what the outcome was! Just to repeat what Ed said, remember to call Verizon to have a Network Interface Unit installed. When it comes time to troubleshoot problems, an NIU is a real help!

Well, now Bobny has spent the money, I wonder if an RF filter would have cured the problem? High frequency undetectable to average human ear, esp. with bandpass limited telephne set, but answering machine 'hears' it and thinks it's dial tone? John C. (Not Garand)
