Originally posted by EV607797: Yes, but if it is connected in parallel on the same line, then the modem going off-hook will emulate the required off-hook condition. The modem can also do the dialing while the EV-1 just begins playing the recorded message until the modem drops the line.
Also, let's not forget that some modems still have A lead settings that will provide an off-hook contact closure to activate external devices. That's how I read it to work too. Here is the product description, straight from the Viking page. The EV-1 is a line powered emergency voice announcer designed to add a natural voice announcement to any telephone. The announcer provides 10 seconds for non-volatile voice record time that can be used to communicate the location for an emergency phone, or a piece of malfunctioning equipment.
The announcement repeats continuously after the call has been answered. Emergency personnel can stop and start the announcement at will by dialing a Touch Tone "*". Anthony, about the USP AVD45B Voice Dialer : I see it has an AC power supply, but didn't catch anything about a back-up (other than the mention of memory storage via flash), is there a battery back-up on that?

Well, the customer reviewed all options and chose the Viking EV-1 today. So I ordered it from Graybar and will update on the install.
Thanks again!
