I have a customer who would like to tie one of their XTS nodes to a Shoretel "system" at a remote location in Texas via IP.

The hub system is a Triad 3, so IP networking from the hub is out of the question. What they are asking us to do is to put an IP card in one of their local nodes that will provide trunking to the Shoretel.

They want to have station-to-station dialing, basically networking without really being networked. They also want to route outward calling in Texas through the XTS node here. They have accepted the fact that we may have to provide trunking in two different directions. Since I don't know anything about the Shoretel equipment, I really can't say for sure that we can even accomplish this.

What they are basically asking for is to use a Shortel system as a networked node. Does any body know if this will even work, and if so, what limitations we'll be facing?

I don't thing there is anyway to have transparent extension dialing. You might be able to access a trunk then dial the extension but I doubt that as well. I think it would work more like a standard ip phone, such as a Polycom, you program the ip and it rings into the operator. Other than that you are not going to get much. Vodavi voip net config will only talk to other Vodavis so tech service has informed me.

Lowest common denominator here. Use something like the Multi-Tech VoIP FX at each end. One tied to a single line port and the other to a loop start CO port.

Maybe use the vodavi voip express box's? Or maybe a Quintum? I'm like you, I have no idea how a shoretel functions.

I suppose it may be possible to connect to the Shortel via SIP with the new 4.0 software on the XTS, if you have a separate VoIP card just for this purpose. Of course that would require some experimentation.

Perhaps the Shortel people could provide an ATA on your end that you could tie into open CO ports. Perhaps you could do some fancy DISA setup and route calls through your system?

Otherwise, I would vote for the Multi-Tech option as well.
