Greetings to everyone on this board.
I'm an IT guy and am not really familiar with PBX and telecom equipment.
I have "inherited" a NEC Electra Elite 192 system (no manuals -- sigh), and would like to ask for some help. I have been reading NEC posts on this forum for about a week now, but could find only portions of what I think I need.
Our problem is, somebody apparently dialed 911. When the police came, we couldn't tell from what extension it was dialed from. And nobody confessed to it.
I'm thinking if I can see the SMDR, then I could tell from what extension 911 was dialed.
Our system has an MIFM card (which I think is needed for SMDR). I have connected a serial cable to COM2 of the box the MIFM card is in, and connected the other end to a PC's COM1 port and running procomm+ (38400 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit).
Procomm+ says "Procomm Plus ready!", and indicates I am on-line. I was expecting a stream of data to show up on my PC's screen, but nothing is happening. I've hit Enter and the "\" keys a couple of times, but nothing happens.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I should do next, to obtain the SMDR output.

smdr is usually output as the call is ended. it will not store the records for very long. so if this happened past 20 calls ago you're SOL.
now if you keep the pc connected all the time from now on and auto save to a file then you'll know from now on.

Thanks for your reply Chris. However, I did try calling out, then kept the PC on and connected the whole weekend. No screen output whatsoever. Is it possible that SMDR is turned off? And if so, can it be turned on? The Procomm+ status line shows the terminal emulation is ANSI, full duplex, 34800 N81, LOG CLOSED, PRINT OFF, ON LINE. And yes, I guess it's too late now for me to find out who dialed 911. </font> Hi, I think that SMDR and LCR share the same MIFM card, therefore, you will need to disable LCR if you have that activated. Also, did you check to make sure the comm port setting from your KSU is right? It's set via handset programming. Good luck.

When Printer is assigned, and a printer is not connected to the system, a PRINTER TROUBLE LCD indication and an audible alert tone are provided at the first two Multiline Terminals connected to the system (Stations 100 and 101). When an MIFM-U( ) ETU is not installed or disabled, no alarm indication is given. 􀀀 When Caller ID is installed, SMDR prints the incoming caller telephone number when received from the Central Office.
DISA (Both incoming and outgoing) is printed. Format shown is printed when incoming caller hangs up first. Format is reversed when called party hangs up first.

are the phone ports set to print out smdr? program 4-56 if not.

I found out that:
a) 1-5-13 was set to "NO", changed it to "YES" b) 1-5-26 was set to "OUT", changed this to "ALL" c) LCR is off (I think) d) SMDR is on e) don't know if 7-1 (card interface slot assignment) is correct (more on this below)
When I changed 1-5-13 to "YES" I got the message (on the phone LCD) "PRINTER TROUBLE" along with beeping (some response at last!) -- which went away as soon as I re-connected the PC.
However, the only output on screen is the following: €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€
Are these non-ASCII values? So I think I still need to do something to get readable output.
The rest of the values I found are as follows:
1. Memory Block 1-5-02 (SMDR Print Format) to select ALL (default) to print all digits or MASK to hide the last four digits of a telephone number. ---> 02:FORMAT ALL
2. Memory Block 1-5-13 (Printer Connected Selection) to assign a Printer for SMDR to operate. ---> 13:PRINTER NO (I changed this to YES)

7-1 is probally ok. you can connect to the system via sat if i remember right. and you're getting something on the computer
1-8-35 baud rate.is your computer set to the same baud?! data bits? stop bits? parity? baud=38.4kbps 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit
and are you in the right com port on the phone system?! should be on com2 (middle one i think)

YES. I CYCLED THRU ALL PORTS (01 - C0), ALL OF THEM ARE SET TO "PRT OUT YS".

and are you in the right com port on the phone system?! should be on com2 (middle one i think) I THINK I'M CONNECTED TO THE CORRECT COM2. CAUSE IF I TAKE THE SERIAL CABLE OFF, I GET "PRINTER TROUBLE" AND BEEPING ON MY PHONE UNTIL I PUT IT BACK. SINCE WE HAVE 2 BOXES, IF I CONNECT IT TO THE OTHER BOX'S COM2, PROCOMM+ SAYS I'M OFFLINE AND THE "PRINTER TROUBLE" AND BEEPING DOESN'T STOP UNTIL I PUT THE CABLE BACK TO THE OTHER BOX'S COM2 PORT.
