ok are you ready for a total cross-connect noob question?
whats the proper and best way to remove wire thats already been punched down in a cross connect?
i need to flip a few phone lines and have decided that moving the wires on the cross connect will be the best way to go. (long story)
anyways, the only way i can see to get the wire out it to pull on it hard, which must be BAD lol.

It doesn't take much to pull it out. Just be sure to use your pick tool to clean out any stuck insulation or your next termination may not be good. Those 66 blocks are pretty tough.

ok.. i'll just yank them out... your mentioned a "pick tool"... should this of come with my punch-down tool? i'm not new to networking and IT but i'm very new to the phone system thing... so bear with me lol

no a pick tool is just a tool with an L shaped wire that comes out the end...a bent paper clip can do the same job. It allows you to pick out the little stuff. looks kinda like this: ![[Linked Image from toolking.com]](https://www.toolking.com/media/catalog/category/pick_icon.png)

Check your punch down tool. It may have a pick that you pull out from the side of it.

hmm no go on my punch tool having a hook... is a paperclip really safe? i've noticed that sometimes i'm getting small sparts when i'm punching down... guess i'm touching metal to metal somewhere.

When I come across copper, built-up insulation debri in the 66 block pin, use a small flathead to spread the pins, & then with my other hand use the afore-mentioned "spudger", "probe pick", to get it out. Sometimes you need to "squeeze" the pins back. A pair of long-nose pliers or placing your punch tool over the pin, then gently rocking it from side to side will restore the gap.
The only place I can find one of the above is at Graybar. Never used the one that comes with punch tools these days...just not as good a tool as the above!
