Can you put a PRI T-1 line into a channel bank and breakout to DID and Loop Lines to a Norstar system? Has anyone ever tried this?
Thanks,

I've never seen one. But if it does exist it would be more of a switch than a channel bank. It would need to translate the ISDN to dtmf and if it did that what would the piont be in having PRI. On top of a expensive equipment tranlating protocols you would loose a ds0.

Just to add to SST. A channel bank breaks the T1 down to single channel with single channel signaling, so it wouldn't work with a D channel. Also have to agree with "what's the point" even if it could be done you'd loose the functionality of the PRI.

The company you want to look into is Vina Technologies (now larscom). They have a product that might suit your needs. Their equipment is very good and I have used it in the field for years.

here is a link:

On the pri note, I understand t1 but pri is a bit confusing, dont I still get 23 B channels to work with and is it better to go with 10 instead of 4 digit numbers when recieving from telco ?? thanks for the input in advance

I don't see any advantage to receiving 10 digits - 3 or 4 should be just fine. I personally like to make DN's the same as the received digits whenever possible.

You apparently have never worked on large networked phone systems then. Seven digits is about the minimum IMHO you want to recieve as you may have over-lapping DID ranges.

PRI strips the 24th channel out for signaling Q9.31. This "digital" channel actually talks to the CO allowing you to do many things like pre-empting calls..ie before the call is placed and uses a channel the data stream checks. Caller id in and out, and manipulation thereof. Faster start and stop. Immediate notification of failure unlike just a T1. Ability to use channels for incomming and outgoing at 64k sampling. Ability to strip out BRI for video teleconferencing or routers. Remember, PRI is simply software that "rides" a T1.

Thanks for the input you are correct about the 7 digit if overlapping becomes an issue but I dont think in my instance it will make much of an impact, this company is not going to get larger than 150 and I think to save on the key punching I will let the co send 4 digits. If I do find myself with a bigger job I will use your advice. Thanks again...... Richey
