Sometimes I like to have deep thoughts. So I started to ponder what it takes to fix things. I came up with this list of four things that if you have enough of these four things you can fix anything.
1. Documentation
2. Tools
3. Materials,
4. Time
I told this to one of our area managers and he said it was his job to see that we did not get any of these things.

5. EXPERIENCE,

If you have a good background you don't need to know each and every system inside and out. You'll have the one tool it take to trouble shoot, experience. IMHO

Redtail did I understand you to say your Area Manager did not want you to have those four items? If so, tell him I said he's fired !! JustBill's experience definitely needs to be number five. In my earlier days Mark, if you had baling wire you could fix anything. But that again was before technology?? It has just about gotten to the point of not fixing anymore, just throw it out and buy new. This is an excellent topic Redtail, glad ya brought it up.

I've seen supervisors like that. "You don't need the info just do it like I tell ya." Well we all know where that leads, don't know how you can program something without documentation, just like the old days ya needed the doc's to wire it, different technology same needs.

Just noticed, congrats on the mod job punch down.

Just as oxygen and hydrogen make water I look at experience as the application of the four elements of repair. Training is mostly documentation and times. Mark You have me stumped. I don’t know if duck tape is a tool or material.

it's both. plus it saves time and holds the documentation to the wall so you can read it.
You could also use it to muzzle and hog tie that manager.
