I had a customer ask me where the term "Camp On" originated from. I know what it means, but I'm not sure about the origin. Anyone?

NEC search for systems, cards, phones, software, manuals and repairs!

In 3D shooter games, people who sit in one spot waiting for the enemy to walk into their line of fire are called "campers". But I don't know which term came first....

Man I can’t remember the first time I heard the term for sure but I’m thinking it was when I was in Tech. School (1983) learning the 6A intercom system. Too many beers and too many sunsets since then.

I forgot to mention that this was in the 1A1 & 1A2 days.

When Ed gets back we will learn more about this subject. LoL

Campon & Park where a provider specific term in the infancy of Interconnect . Users wanted the ability to get rid of a call to a busy extension . The days before work station , server based an emdedded voicemail . Reception / Operators did not want to keep taking paper messages . Remember the Yellow "while you were out" message slips in your in box ? For those of us over 100 ! It was a huge selling point from 1974 to 1986 ! Now adays when you call a busy number it just reroutes to VM and that's the Yellow slip message taker . I am sure Ed will read and not provide the Readers Digest Answer . Gotta Luv Ed !

Now Call Park is a unique feature seperate from Campon ! Anyone know the difference ?

If I remember correctly Camp on meant that when the called busy station hung up the camped on call would ring the station immediatly.

Whereas call park puts the call on a kind of system hold that can be answered from another station.

I the restaurant business a camper is the yankee that gets to the table at 4 pm orders a coffee and stays until 11:30.

As far a camp-on it is a tranfer to a busy ext with notifcation (muted ring ect).
