I got a call from an oil company that has a radio tower in the back of their yard. It got hit by lightning, the other night. There is a 25 pair cat 5e between the out building and the main office. I couldn't believe how far into the building the damage was. It took out PC's, power bars, burnt ports in patch panels, radios, 2 fax machines, blew face off a 6 port patch panel and countless switches. The control center runs 24/7, the operators saw sparks shooting across the parking lot, when the lightning hit. I had 4 data outlets that had no outward damage but had open pins, my Fluke found the opens. Amazing stuff

this might open their eyes a bit , not just the money lost for equipment repair but the downtime need to be factored in .

I've seen lightning take out a lot of stuff. A direct hit like that will get anything it wants! frown

Then tell them this:
"The only thing worse than needing equipment and not buying it, is to find out that you have paid for it but don't have it." :thumb:

If the customer will not pay to do it correctly, then the installation should not be done. Lightning protection is not just to protect equipment, it is also to protect people. In this situation, someone could have easliy gotten hurt.

I worked at a southern Kansas SRS department that got hit one day. Once I arrived and saw the damage...WOW...the lightning hit a car in the parking lot about 30' from the building. The concrete under the tires had blown apart. The 20 or so windows on that side of the building had all blown out and copper melted in the cabling. I got to the phone system and when I pulled the cards out of the Toshiba DK280 the copper off the cards was balled up and rolling around in the cabinet. Needless to say that was a very long day!
