Beyond what's on my phone, I've never felt the need for a GPS but I'm looking for one now as a present for my daughter. It needs to be a portable for her car... any experience or recommendations anybody would like to share would be appreciated

I like Garmin & it's pink too! Other colors available. https://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12456292

I got a Motorola Droid from Verizon and the navigation features work great. Street, Satelite, and Map views, along with Driving, Public Transport, and Walking Directions.

Thanks, guys, for all the input. (And next time I should remember there aren't many new questions and do a topic search before starting a new thread.)

I considered all the feedback, did some research on the web and decided on the Garmin Nuvi 855T. She's headed off in the spring to grad school in Connecticut and I just wanted to make sure she could find her way back home. smile

Well, I still worry about people using the GPS instead of good ole' common sense.

I just read something in the paper that someone drove into a river around here because that's where the GPS said to go.

Last year someone got stuck on a snowmobile trail because that's there the GPS said to go.

Personally I like the TomToms because you can upload and download map corrections for free. It saves you having to buy a new map every few years to keep up to date. User interface is very good too and prices have dropped along with all the others in recent months.
