When customers ask for something, I often have to decipher their request. Here are some common items. What other words can be added to this list? When I try to clarify their requests, I may get a variety of responses. "You should know what I mean", "I'm not a technical person", "I dunno, you're the expert", etc...

What they ask for / What they want
EXTENSION / Line
RECEIVER / Handset
HANDSET / Telephone
LINE / Extension, phone or jack
PBX / Phone system

I can't tell you how many times we get calls from customers asking us to come out and add lines to their system. Even after asking them if they ordered lines from the telco, we still find out that they meant cable runs for stations.

Now as for the use of the word handset, well that is like nails on a chalk board to me. Sort of like the age-old issue with misuse of "their, there and they're" or "your and you're".

people come in my office all the time asking for a 'cord'
10 minutes later they tell me exactly what kind of 'cord' they need.

Jeff, just tell 'em that the CORD was only produced in the '30s and the college doesn't have the cash to have any sitting around, waiting for someone to want to use them. (Yeah, Yeah, but the 7/8s Cord was nothing more than a Pinto in disguise)

I mentioned this in another thread. Those CGs and IT "professionals" that think it's cool to say voip as a word. Sorry dudes, but it sounds like you are getting ready to barf up your breakfast.
