I found 2 interesting videos on YouTube:

This one is called "Wired For Sound" and shows telephone wire being made in a Western Electric facility.

This one is called "Rings and Busy Signals". It gives audio samples of various rings and busy signals in use throughout the Bell System.

Samples were mostly from New York Telephone COs. One thing I noticed is that none of the busy signals sound like the one we had around here in the Boston area.

One of my co-workers is a retired New England telephone technician and he said that COs in Arlington and Somerville Mass were either "Steppers" or "Crossbars" (he can't remember).

They are now both 5Es.

The manufactuer of cable has always interested me, thanks for sharing.

I still have no idea on a few things though,

How do they
1) get the coating on the wire AND have secondary colors stripes?

2) Get the coating on teh cable bundle of un-armored cable without it sticking to the wires?

3) Would love to see the slack take up mechanisms for when they are taking it down to 22/24 AWG.

Dig that soundtrack!!

We have a customer that manufactures cable for the electric utility companies. Machines that take spools of bare copper, as big as in the last scene, twirl them around to twist the conductors together, apply and cure the insulating coating, spool them back up.

A electrical test room that can't have a phone come in on copper, so it uses fiber, ethernet, and a Citel MCK extender.

I get blisters on my feet just walking from one end of the plant to the other. Thank goodness they run their own inside wire, and we just terminate and maintain the phone system!!

After the bare wire is in storage, it grows the colors depending on the gas introduced into the room
Everyone knows that
