What is your recommendation for a new flat panel TV? I should say that HiDef and 3D are not at the top of my list of features. My main interests are long-life and low power consumption. This will be in the bedroom and no, not for porn, although...... smile
Plasma
LCD
LED
Is Plasma is power hungry and "may be short lived". (Just what I've read.)
Does LED only refer to the 'backlight source for LCD'?

My wife just picked up a 32" Visio LED tv for our fireplace room a week ago. I don't know much about the technical aspects of it, but the picture is sharp in HD, light as a feather (14lbs). It has an external power brick just like a laptop computer (runs on 19v). The audio is crappy at best, so i'll need to hook up some type of external sound to it.
If I learn anything more, I'll pass it along.

There are a lot of variables when picking a TV. If your looking for some super advice on TV's head over to "https://www.highdefforum.com/" they helped me pick my last TV.

I can give you some advice too.

Yes. LED just refers to the backlight technology. LCD's and LED's both use the same technology to render the picture, just different lighting techniques behind it.

In regards to power consumption it goes LED, LCD, Plasma. Plamsa uses the most electricity.

In regards to quality of picture it goes LCD, LED, Plasma. Plasma produces the best picture.

In regards to price it goes LCD/Plasma, LED. LED costs the most.

As far as life expectancy goes it varies. The brand name plays a big role in how long you want your TV to last. Here is a good guide on brand names https://www.highdefforum.com/flat-panel-tvs/57224-flat-panel-buyers-guide-noobs.html

Before you go and try to find a TV you need to decide how BIG a TV you want/need. This calculator is a good place to start. It takes all factors into play including your eyesight!. What good is a high def TV if you can't decern the difference between 1080p and 720p? https://myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html

I bought a 40" LCD 1080p samsung last year. In hindsight I wish I bought the similarly price Plasma. LCD's just don't give the picture quality that a plasma can deliver. A LED TV can proboably match a plasma in quality, but definitly not in price. Even with power consumption taken into account I would prefer the Plasma at this point in time.

We've got a 55" LG LED and love it. Ours has got a 240 hz refresh which makes watching sports exceptional.

I went to Best Buy, there they had displays of the same brand tv in all three forms so you could actually see the difference in picture quality. Once we knew what we wanted, we shopped around for the best price, which incidentally was significantly cheaper than the BB price.

By the way, my wife bought the visio at Walmart for about $340. She went back twice after seeing it cheaper at 2 other places and got it down to 275 I believe. She's a better negotiator than me.

A plasma screen is highly reflective. If you have much lighting in your room, it can look like a window reflecting whatever is in the background.

For myself, I decided upon an LED set mainly because of the lower power consumption. Wave your hand in front of a large LCD TV screen and you can "feel the force!"

I stream Netflix and picture quality is generally indistinguishable from that of a DVD. But picture size may have something to do with that. Mine is just 37". It is the XVT373SV Vizio

I have a 55 inch Phillips Plasma in my "Man Cave". Anyway it was given to me because it was having power issues. I replaced the power supply for a lil over $100 bucks. I love this tv. however I will say that is is One Heavy SOB. It took me and my neighbor to get it on top of my desk/entertainmet center. Also Plasma TV's put of a great deal of Heat.

Plasma TV's typically have higher maintenace and repair costs, and are more prone to failure..ie. bad power supply, etc..

LED if you can do it. Do you have HD cable or satelite? HD TVs give an OK picture when using standard def, but are really suited for HD. We stream a lot of netflix, and do Vudu, as well as Blu-Ray, so the HD is the only way to go. There will be lots of deals this weekend for sure!
