Different countries still refer to the Electronic Private Automatic Branch eXchange. Seldom do you hear the term "Hybrid" which most Key Service Units (notably Panasonic) are today. SInce the manufacturer refers to their own product as an IP PBX, you look silly calling it something else.

Of course, on ePay, "Phone System" can mean anything, including cordless phones, and "Key System" is a box where you put your keys LOL

PBX = Private Branch Exchange
PABX = Private Automatic Branch Exchange
EPBX = Electronic Private Branch Exchange
And last, but not least,
EPABX = Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange

Actually, without going to other languages, there are probably other versions, with words like 'miniature', 'fast', 'light-speed', 'ad naseum', etc.

Do these people have any idea what a real PBX is?

The 'cabinet' on an Inter-Tel AXXESS is called a KSU. Key System Unit?

If you can dial 9 or pool key or go offfhook to access a pool of lines it is not technically a PBX? Verizon sure thought so when they use to bill for trunk charges.

Yes. In the early days, anytime you enabled a system to access lines with a dial code, you were supposed to have it registered as a PBX. No one ever did of course because then the TelCo made you upgrade your lines to trunks. It had to do with the supposed increase in CCS (hundred Calling Seconds). To be registered as a KSU it had to be square.
