I just got a call for a bid of 100 dual drops of cat6 PVC for a warehouse converting in to a large office space in NYC at this point all the walls will be opened (all studs) and the average run is about 150ft.. They are goig with a VOIP 3 com system for voice and need the seconed cat6 as a spare? i dont get it why go with another cat 6? any how the main question is how do i price cat6, i have never terminated cat6 and does the volume amount of the drops constitute a discount per drop if so by how much? my regular office runs for a combo of voice and data (cat5e & cat3)is about 120.00 per location avg job 35 runs and about 100ft. I must have in mind wire managment because the wiring has no support drop ceiling etc.. there will be heavy competion. Is there a formula??

Well not sure in your area, but in the Dallas area, and for Plenum cable, CAT 6 cost about a third more than CAT 5e per 1000. Jacks are about a third more, and Patch Panels are about 50% more. My normal run is 125 so yours are a little more. Mainly you will need to price your equipment and go from there. Good luck. I hate doing a bid on CAT 6 because its hard to compete with the big boys on it.

If you are running dual cat 6 pulls through framing you should look at dual cable it will make your life a lot easier, be very careful on your bend radii and even more important keep the electricians and their BX away from your feed thrus-good luck on that one. Are you going to have to certify the job? I imagine if it's a NYC commercial job it will be fast track too so you will need to meet their schedule, and of course make sure you are not going to have union issues.

I charge extra for CAT 6 because it is more labor intensive in pulling the drops and terminating on both ends. How are you able to use PVC in NY? I thought the whole state was plenum code.

Punchdown , May I ask why Cat6 is more labor intensive than say Cat5E? Maybe I'am missing something here.

Not any diff between 5e and 6, what I meaning to say was more work than Cat 3.

Personally I can pull or terminate cat 3,5,6, in about the same amount of time.
66 or 110 blocks on the cat3 doesn't matter.

There is a difference in terminating, cat6 has that center separator that needs to be cut off and it's a little harder to line up the wires going into the connector because of it. Other than that, I don't see any difference between 5e & 6.

If your in NYC or any other part of the Eastern Megolopolis, you better bid plenum. PVC will not meet code. Nearly all urban codes require Plenum cable, and have for some time. I haven't bought PVC cable in a few years, and I am pretty rural from those areas. It's not worth the time and expense of useing the PVC as a "pull string" when you need to replace it to meet code. Been there, done that.
