I just bought a 25 pair amphenol crimper or butterfly crimper as they are commonly known. If anyone has any tips or tricks for crimping 25 pair amphenol plz share. I've seen them used and know enough to crimp one but is there any tricks or time savers to this?

I found its easier if I leave the wire a little long after I strip back the insulation. If its short, it may be harder to manage after you thread it into the connectors. The best way is to give it a go and find what works best for you.

Not really a time saver, but: We used to take about 2 inches of the 25pr cable jacket that had been removed, and double up the jacket at the base of the connector. Maybe the connectors we had just didn't snug up to the jacket, or the guy who trained me just liked a bit of extra padding for the strain releif.

After threading all of your pairs, pull up the slack via the last pair first. It will save trouble when trying to insert the cover. You also need to take care not to bend the wire forward (toward the screw) to much or you can cause crimping and possible damage.

Did your crimper come with a centering head?. If so make sure you calibrate the head after about 20 or so connectors. It will minimize damaging heads while crimping. As you know the pins in the head itself are very thin and prone to "crushing"

How would I know it was a centering head? What would I look for?

When you make your first crip watch were the "fingers" line up with the amphenol head. There should be adjustment screws on the top of the crimper, then lock screws on the sides (just about mid way down the connector clamp)

The fingers do not adjust but the amphenol clamp does.

Before your first crimp check to make sure these things line up. Waste a connector if you need to but I cant stand to waste the time I spent threading a cable just to find that I smashed some of the pins and the connection is no good.

To be honest I just buy my cables these days (slacker) LOL

Bring the cable up, pull the wires tight and start making them from the bottom up (V/S pair on a female, BL/W on a male) - it's a lot easier, you're not working over yourself, just building out.

I had to make one this year for the first time in forever. Paperhanger got water inside of an amphenol (wall phone removed for his convenience).

I had a plastic baggie over the connector and he took it off! Still not sure why. Next thing I know the first line is hosed. Trace the problem back to that cable, Opened up the amp and the contacts are burned. Barely had enough slack to make a new connector and that was with the tool perpendicular on the wall.

A lot of bad language heard that day - but I couldn't have done it without the tool!
