That is something I've never heard of before. Quite a specialty!

That's one of the things we do not have to worry about around here.

A friend of my family manages the office building at One Wilshire in LA, which is one of the largest telecom hotels in the world. There are some pictures around the internet, the place is just STUFFED with copper/fiber. I am planning to go to LA after the Vegas trip, maybe I can get a tour smile

Nfcphoneman -

When I was doing work for the CLECs back in the dot-com days we ran into them very often here in NYC.

They had usually come in and sold the building owner/manager a bill of goods and then subbed everything out. I guess they provided a measure of control - for a while here everyone was coming in and running their own risers - AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Winstar, MFN, MFS, etc, etc. In some instances it was getting out of hand.

However, most of what they did was to add a level of bureaucracy and confusion to the job.

And line their own pockets.

Jeff, One Wilshire is really an amazing building. Just the backup generators alone are worth touring. That's where a gazillion data circuits terminate, and every carrier is co-located there. Very few human beings in the building. mostly switches.

The idea of tracing a broken pair in the place gives me a migrane.

Okay, I'll comment off-topic also.

I worked in the OneWilshire building for about 9 years. The telcom companies pushed out most of legal companies over time. Originally telecom companies would install conduit from their suite to another company for connectivity. When the building management realized it was getting way out of control with conduits running from suit to suit then getting abandoned, they decided to commit the 4th floor as a meet-me-room. Everyone then had conduit to the mmr for connectivity. As time went on the mmr got out of control too, with abandoned wire from cabinet to cabinet. They started to then designate wire from each cabinet to a central mdf that the building would cross-connect. I haven't been their in a while to see how that worked out.

Looking at those pics brought back some tired memories of working in that building. When the building would test the backup generators we had to come in during the maintenance window (midnight to 6am) to baby sit the switch. They would cut from commercial power to the generators, sometime the relays wouldn't switch you over and your switch would be on batteries only. This is not a good feeling as a switch tech. Batteries only last a few hours. At least once I was there when the generator power didn't come on and the batteries died before we got power back on. If you've ever been in a CO when it dies, it's a really creepy sound to hear that happy hum turn to silence. It’s almost a pathetic moan, the sound of death. Knowing you have to repower the switch and test everything to get it back online and writing post-mortems and all those conference calls afterward.... I don't miss life a CO.
