We have an ESI 200 server with 48 key phones. I am trying to figure out how to retrieve messages remotely. The problem is that I am never prompted to enter a password. I always hear my greeting. When I press the * key during the greeting, I am always disconnected. I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas how to get to the announcement of the number of messages with playback?

Thanks,
Steve

Try it during the main greeting not your mailbox greeting.

Good advice ... hit 8 from your personal greeting

No matter whether I am in the personal greeting or main greeting, hitting the * key hangs up. I get the "Goodbye" message and that ends the call. If I am at the personal greeting and hit 8, I do get back to the main greeting. But, alas, the * key always ends the call.

One other thing. If I am at the main greeting, I can get to my personal greeting by punching in my extension without the * key. If I hit the * + Extension, it hangs up.

That isn't right - call in your reseller as either you are doing something wrong or you have a software bug.

When you call in from outside, if you are calling a DID, you need to dial 8, wait for the main greeting to begin playing, then dial *300 (300 is the extension number, so change this to whatever mailbox you're trying to reach).

You have to dial the *300 in steady, quick succession. No pauses in between.

For some reason the ESI system is very picky about the sequence speed with that function.

Every time we've had that issue with a customer, we've not been able to replicate it unless we pause when dialing.

If you're still not getting access remotely, I agree with upstate, you will want to check with your reseller and have them check it out.

I should probably clarify my response a little bit. However you normally reach your mailbox when you dial in remotely, once you hear your personal greeting you need to dial 8 to get back to the main greeting menu. Once you are in the main greeting, dial *300. It doesn't matter whether your system is set up with DID routing or not.

BINGO! LaTuFu, you hit the nail on the head! I tried doing it quickly at the main greeting and it worked. I, along with several employees have never been able to get it to work. Contributing to the problem was probably that we are using cell phones and I don't think we hit the buttons as fast as we might on a desk telephone. I wonder if there is some kind of delay that can be set up...
